At 46, I went back to school. After starting two master’s programs that never quite fit, I finally found one that did. This Master’s in Leadership connected directly to my real-life work in finance at a medical school, making everything I learned immediately applicable. In my next-to-last class, I suffered a stroke after a routine surgery. Thanks to an incredibly supportive instructor, I was able to keep going despite the setback. I did all of this while raising two teenage boys and juggling life with three dogs. This degree is proof that it’s never too late to finish what you start—especially when it finally feels right.Shelby W., MS in Leadership
Balancing full-time and part-time jobs while being a full-time mom, I pursued my degree with determination. Exhaustion was constant, but I turned lunch breaks into study sessions, late nights into writing time, and early mornings into quiet focus. Juggling work, motherhood, and academics taught me discipline, resilience, and perseverance. Graduation wasn’t just a personal achievement—it symbolized sacrifice, strength, and the promise of a better future for my daughter. My journey proved that with courage and commitment, even the toughest challenges can be overcome.Tijuana W., BA in Criminal Justice
Before Grantham I had previously attempted college three times. Feeling kicked down, I felt that I would never obtain any way to enter the profession of my dreams. None of the colleges I attended in those times however offered as flexible and straightforward courses as they were here. My advisor was always there and willing to work with me through any circumstances. Grantham gave me the confidence to continue forward and not give up on my future.Steven M., AS in Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology
Being a first generation college graduate means everything I achieved was built without a roadmap. I balanced work, family, and life’s unexpected challenges while often doubting whether I truly belonged in higher education. There were many moments I wanted to quit, especially when exhaustion or fear set in. What kept me going was remembering why I started and the encouragement of those who believed in me, especially my family, who never stopped reminding me that I was capable even when I struggled to see it myself. This degree is more than a diploma. It is proof that perseverance, resilience, and faith in yourself can change the course of a generation.Sunnie D., MBA in Business Administration
Being a full time career/student/father always has many challenges. Trying to balance work/school/kids can bring on lots of challenges to continue going to school. It took me longer than I wanted, but I kept pushing with my wife's support always telling me to just keep going. I took some breaks off from college when I really needed it to focus on family but my wife and family always guided my back to get it finished. I thank them all the time for pushing me to finish and get to the end.Jared B., AS in Computer Science
Completing my degree required perseverance through real challenges. I worked full time while recovering from two back surgeries and raising four children. I volunteer year-round as a youth sports coach in baseball, football, and wrestling, and I also serve as an assistant varsity football coach. At home, my family and I manage a small hobby farm with chickens, pigs, and a few steer. Balancing work, recovery, family, service, and academics took discipline and resilience, but the effort was worth it. I am proud of this accomplishment and grateful for the support of my family.Jarrod H., BS in Engineering Management Technology
Completing my degree was not just an academic achievement; it was a personal victory marked by perseverance and resilience. My journey included challenges that tested my focus and motivation, as I balanced rigorous coursework with personal responsibilities. Despite the overwhelming pressure and moments of self-doubt, I remained committed to my goal. I improved my time management skills, sought academic support, and held myself accountable. Each setback motivated me to work harder. My belief in the importance of education and determination to finish what I started carried me through. Earning my degree represents not only academic success but also personal growth and the ability to turn obstacles into accomplishments.Druezilla A., BS in Health Information Management
Completing my degree was one of the hardest and most meaningful things I’ve ever done. I pushed through two high-risk pregnancies that left me hospitalized, while working full time for the Oklahoma Army National Guard and raising my family. I started this journey during COVID and endured three newborn stages, a move, a government shutdown, and times when my children were sick or hospitalized. Many nights I studied exhausted and alone while my husband worked night shift, caring for our children and supporting me however he could. There were moments I wanted to quit, but my children were my why. This degree represents resilience, sacrifice, and choosing not to give up.Amber H., BBA in Business Administration - Human Resource Management Concentration
Completing this degree was a test of persistence as much as academic ability. Balancing a demanding healthcare career, personal responsibilities, and coursework required focus, adaptability, and steady determination. There were moments when the pace felt exhausting, but I learned to move forward by taking challenges one step at a time and staying committed to the larger goal. What carried me through was the reminder that progress does not have to be perfect to be meaningful. Support and encouragement from others, along with that mindset, helped me stay motivated during difficult stretches. Reaching this milestone reflects resilience, consistency, and a willingness to push through adversity to achieve long-term goals.Charliene R., MHA in Healthcare Administration
Despite adversity and obstacles along the way, I remained determined and resilient, balancing life and work while pursuing my academic goals, and I am now preparing to graduate and look forward to new career paths and opportunities. Along with the possibility of continuing to earn my Bachelors Degree. I loved this online school and will be forever thankful for all that helped me along this journey!!Emerald E., AA in Business Administration and Management
Dr. Megan Patton-Carter unknowingly gave me the encouragement to continue to strive to maintain my 4.0 GPA. On days that I had a lot of things to do or personal problems, her encouraging words helped me to get through my assignments.Tammy H., AAS in Medical Coding and Billing
Earning my degree is more than a personal achievement it represents the legacy my family built before me. I was inspired by the path my mom and sister conquered years ago, showing me what perseverance truly looks like. I am most proud to have my father’s name on my degree, honoring the sacrifices he made when he set aside his own education to provide for our family. This milestone fuels my drive to keep pushing forward. The journey continues, and the next road is my Master’s.Thomas M., BBA in Business Administration - General Management Concentration
Finally completing my degree has been one of the most meaningful achievements of my life. It has all been about dedication, believing in myself, and pushing forward through tough times. I struggled with managing my time and I missed deadlines along the way; I often worried about falling behind, but I learned to take one step at a time, hold myself accountable, and to celebrate all my small achievements. Without having family support, I often felt alone. But with the encouragement from my instructors, they fueled my motivation and kept me focused Graduating from UAG has proven my passion, determination, and strength in myself and in this program. It is a personal victory that I will forever be proud of. Thank you UAG!Erica C., AA in Business Administration and Management
I am a non-traditional student trying to get my life together so that I can provide for my son and myself and give him a life that's stress free. I am the primary parent to my son and I work 50+ hours a week- so adding school to our busy lives was hard, but it was worth it. I am showing my son that if it's something you really want, go after it! There will always be hard times, there will always be ups and downs in our lifetime, but it's all about how we make it out of those hard times and down moments. I am grateful for UA Grantham and how it is for students like me. You guys, along with my advisor and scholarship director showed me that there are people who believe in us and genuinely want to see us succeed!Rosetta L., AAS in Healthcare Administration

I first attended college back in 2004 and failed. I was not in the right headspace for school. Now, 20 years later, I am attempting again. UA Grantham was a great choice. I was afraid I would fail again, but the courses were informative and gave some room to make errors but learn from them. I am so happy I chose this program. The instructors didn't expect you to be the smartest, but pushed you to accomplish what you set out to do. I am forever grateful.LaDonna T., Certificate - Medical Coding and Billing
I have been through a lot of challenges to reach this goal and it feels good to actually set a goal to change my entire life and how I think and look at things and this is what made the biggest impact for me and helped to understand things differently in a imperfect worldPamela M., MS in Human Resources
I pushed and pushed through my classes because I knew I could do it and with the support from Anna Walters and my family telling me that I can do this I pushed even when I was not feeling good I got up did my assignments and took care of business. You can do anything that you set your mind to doing and believing that you can do it.Melisa G., AAS in Medical Coding and Billing
I struggled with the decision to go forward with my associate degree, but there were a few people who gave me the encouragement to do that and made me realize that I can do anything that I really set my mind to. my family has been a big part of that, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart, and both my student advisors that I have had from the start, Alec Tillery and Jacyln Hansen -- without them, I don't know what I would have done. Any time I needed them, no matter what it was, they were both there to help me through, even if it was just encouragement when I was about ready to give up. I was always told "I GOT THIS," and it definitely helped me go forward. I thank both of u from the bottom of my heart.Brenda S., AAS in Medical Coding and Billing

I'm a STNA currently and had some medical issues come up that will affect me being a STNA, so I decided to go back to college, and I decided on medical billing and coding because I was very interested in this field. For me pushing through challenges was always going back to readings or spending extra time on it to complete it. As for someone who pushed me to succeed is my husband Rian, as well as someone I look at as a mother to me Lisa, without both of them I wouldn't be able to push myself as hard as I have.Brittnay J., Certificate - Medical Coding and Billing
I've come a long way since I started my education journey. I've been on rock bottom and looking back, I feel truly blessed. I'm not proud of where I once was, but when I made the decision to rise from the ashes, it was the first time someone truly believed in me. My husband has been my biggest fan and has coached me through everything from adversity to discouragement. He's seen me at my worst yet still sees my potential. One thing that make me feel better when I feel like my wheels are spinning or that I haven't come very far, is to look back to my worst times. Also make small goals to avoid being overwhelmed.Kelly V., MS in Information Technology
My advisor was a great choice for me; she was kind and helpful and not eager to leave work early, if you catch my meaning. As for me, I eliminated all distractions and prioritized my schoolwork. I have a set schedule that helps me stay focused. Let’s not forget that motivational speakers like Billy Alsbrook and Coach Pain keep me moving in the right direction. Thank you in advance for this opportunity!James M., AS in Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology
My journey was not easy in the slightest bit. For starters, I had no experience or knowledge of the medical field, so everything was new and confusing. I experienced devastating health incidents which required every ounce of perseverance and resilience I had. I never gave up! I reached out to my instructors and Student Advisor and created a game plan. I researched, studied, practiced, persevered and here we are, I am graduating from my Certified Medical Billing and Coding courses. As a medically retired U.S. Army veteran, continuing my education became both a challenge and a promise I made to myself. As an active-duty soldier, father of five, and foster parent to many more, balancing family, service, and graduate studies has been a true test of resilience. Remembering my “why” and relying on resilience training kept me moving, even on the hardest days. My kids’ belief in me and my desire to break generational barriers drove me to succeed.Jason R., MBA in Business Administration

I first started my degree in 2014, but by 2015 I had to stop because of financial challenges. For years, going back felt impossible, but in July 2025, I returned determined to finish what I started. Now, as I graduate with my associate degree in Criminal Justice, I’ve proven to myself that I can overcome anything. This journey wasn’t just for me, it was for my children, to show them that no matter how hard life gets, you never give up on your goals.Ashley W., AA in Criminal Justice
I started my degree in December 2022 while caring for my mom during her battle with cancer. Even though she was bedridden, she constantly encouraged me to keep going and made me promise to graduate. I buried her on the last day of my first term, and that promise became my driving force. After her passing, my husband and I faced unstable housing and toxic environments that left us without food, medication, or support. Despite everything, we took a leap and moved to Virginia, where we finally found a safe, healthy place to rebuild. There were many moments I wanted to give up, but I kept thinking of my mom’s strength and the promise I made. My honest advice: keep going, even when it’s hard.Amanda E., AA in Criminal Justice
I started my degree journey late in life and it's been a journey. Work , life/ balance has been a challenge especially with all the people I have lost during my degree journey. My family and great small circle of friends has pushed me through this journey when I wanted to throw my hands up and quit. I proceeded to keep moving forward , seems like I’m finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. There has been restless nights that I pushed through. Working a full time job, being a single mom , and helping friends when they need me , but I always found time to get my studies in. It is well worth it , sometimes just wished I done this earlier in my life instead of waiting at 42 of age.Elizabeth O., Certificate - Medical Coding and Billing

My journey to earning my Associate’s Degree in Business Administration has been anything but easy. In the past year alone, my car engine went out twice, my daughter was diagnosed with leukemia, and both she and I battled Covid, forcing me to withdraw from two classes and take them later. I also welcomed two new grandchildren during this time. Through it all, I stayed focused, pushed through every obstacle, and reminded myself why I started. This degree represents my strength, my faith, and my family.Amanda F., AA in Business Administration and Management
My master’s degree in leadership was born of a storm. My brother died, and I fell ill, in addition to my other mood disorders, at precisely the same time as I worked full-time through the courses. But I didn’t stop showing up, module by blurry-eyed module, leaning on a resilience that I wasn’t aware had been in me. I found my Instructors to be a source of comfort, courage, patience, flexibility, and enlightened advice, just when I needed it. Their empathy made it easier to remember my brother and maintain my vision for the future. I went on to earn my degree, and perseverance turned me from sorrowful to successful.John S., MS in Leadership
On graduation day, holding that degree wont be just about a piece of paper. It will be what success feels like knowing that no obstacle, seen or unseen, is stronger than my refusal to quit. I won't cross the finish line alone. Dr. Bell believed in my mind when I doubted it, Debra Neiman protected my ability to stay enrolled, and my family carried me when I had nothing left. This degree belongs to all of us, and it’s the hardest, proudest thing I’ve ever earned.Arianna C., BA in Criminal Justice - Homeland Security Concentration

Debra Neiman of the Financial Services team at University of Arkansas Grantham was invaluable throughout my entire Criminal Justice degree journey. From my very first semester, she patiently guided me through funding options, ensured my funds were applied correctly, and quickly resolved every billing issue that arose. Her clear communication and proactive support removed financial stress, allowing me to stay fully focused on my coursework even while juggling work and family. Without Debra’s expertise and her consistent help, completing my bachelor’s degree would have been far more difficult, I truly couldn’t have done it without her guidance when I needed it.Arianna C., BA in Criminal Justice - Homeland Security Concentration
